The Brexit Resilience and Opportunities Group (BROG) for the Heart of the South West is hosting a workshop run by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to offer practical advice to businesses in preparation for leaving the EU.

The Home Office will lead a session on employing EU citizens and the EU settlement scheme; and the BEIS Business Readiness and Intelligence Directorate will lead a session on SME readiness about the nine areas of business activity where a degree of change following EU Exit is expected. To be confirmed is a session run by DEFRA on agri-food considerations post-EU Exit.

Ahead of the workshop, it is timely to reflect on the findings of a recent Heart of the South West Growth Hub survey. Over 190 businesses responded to the online survey aimed at gathering insights and evidence about impacts of Brexit on local businesses and supply chains.

A large majority, some 62%, said they had not made specific EU Exit plans, with lack of time and capacity to plan cited as key issues for their business.

The survey generated responses from a broad range of industry sectors with hospitality & tourism, food & farming, manufacturing, retail, professional services and education being most prevalent.

Amongst a wide range of issues highlighted, increasing costs, access to markets, lack of clarity on tariffs, security of supply, recruitment and staff retention were concerns for SMEs. BROG and The Growth Hub would like to thank all of those businesses who participated in the survey. These results will be shared with stakeholders and Government Departments in response to any forthcoming consultations.
