Andrés Ossa, owner of Spanish Amigos Plymouth – a Spanish language school with a twist, is thrilled after receiving business support for his franchise through the Heart of the South West Growth Hub.

Having lived and worked in Colombia, The USA, Dubai and Dublin, Andrés recently relocated to Plymouth to be nearer to family. He brings with him a wealth of experience in the Customer Service sector and the ability to speak four languages. Wanting to find a way to incorporate his skills and learn about the Plymouth business landscape, Andrés bought into the Spanish Amigos franchise.

With an ability to mix his experience working in customer service with his entrepreneurial prowess, business is doing well and the company offers schools the opportunity to completely outsource after school club’s to a certified organisation where children learn Spanish and the Hispanic culture, including colloquial slang and regional customs. Andrés sees his business as an investment in the community and our future leaders, “We aim to give children a secret weapon in an ever globalised world where being bi-lingual is a norm not an advantage.”

So why approach the Growth Hub?

Feeling unsure about the local business arena, Andrés wanted a foot in the door and required extra support to meet potential Customers as well as like-minded business owners who were facing similar start up challenges.

“Being at networking events alongside the Growth Hub meant I was meeting in the same room as peers who were facing the same issues as me. We could collaborate and share ideas amongst experts, giving each other confidence.”

“Persistence is key, you have to be patient and consistent in business but you should also take help where it is offered and the Growth Hub provides support on a silver platter.”

The Growth Hub referred & introduced Andrés to Business Adviser, Graham Leigh, of the Outset – YTKO programme. As a Plymouth-based adviser, Graham was perfectly placed to provide Spanish Amigos with local knowledge which was specific to his business needs.  “Graham knows people here, he is very knowledgeable about Devon and applied this to my business needs. I really got the feeling he cares about each business he works with.”

Since receiving support, Andrés has expanded the business to offer private tuition for businesses looking to sell to overseas markets and now feels he has the confidence to take the next step and set up a consultancy business.

David Hynd, Programme and Partnership Manager of the HotSW Growth Hub, said: “We introduced Spanish Amigos Plymouth to a funded scheme to assist business start-ups to unleash their growth potential. We are delighted that Andrés has seen real results off the back of the business support he has received.”
