A recent survey indicated that Somerset food and drink businesses were facing a number of challenges in their sector from concerns about food regulations and labelling to issues with training and supply chains. In response to this Sedgemoor and Somerset West and Taunton Councils have partnered with the Growth Hub to produce an event specifically designed for businesses in the food and drink sector.

This Spotlight on Somerset Food and Drink event will give businesses the chance to hear directly from support providers, district authorities and regulators about the support that is available to them and how to overcome the challenges that are being faced.

What: This events has two parts: a Breakfast Briefing and a Workshop

Breakfast Briefing (8am – 10am)

The event will open at 7.30am for an 8am start with refreshments and food (bacon baps and Danish pastries) alongside a chance to network and talk with other business owners.

  • The event’s keynote speaker will be Karl Tucker, Managing Director of Yeo Valley Properties Ltd and Chair of the Heart of the South West LEP.
  • The Growth Hub – David Hynd will introduce some of the support that is freely available to food and drink sector businesses.
  • Heart of the South West Trading Standards – Caroline Dorrell will outline what support and guidance businesses can gain from Trading Standards.
  • Environmental Health – Dave Lea will give a quick introduction to allergens awareness and cross-contamination.
  • South West Food Hub – Greg Parsons will introduce the Hub and what it can do for food and drink businesses.
  • Selected local food and drink businesses will also share some of their recent challenges.
  • A Q&A sessions will follow where the speakers will take any questions.

Workshop: Business Planning Fundamentals for Food and Drink Businesses (10am – 1pm)

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to take a step back from the day to day running of your food and drink business, and guided by an experienced business advisor, work through ways to plan and adapt the future direction of your enterprise.

You’ll be given the tools to review your current business position, including a SWOT analysis, and examine your marketplace in order to identify any new approaches or opportunities. We’ll look at the 7 P’s of marketing and how focusing on benefits and not features when marketing can really improve results. Understanding your finances is crucial so we’ll share our tips on how to manage yours effectively and plan for future challenges particularly in the current economic climate.

This workshop will be delivered by Business Information Point.

At the start of the workshop there will be a brief introduction from the trainer and a couple of forms to complete before we get into the main content. Please try to arrive on time so that we can get this out of the way as quickly as possible.

To speed this up can you please have to hand your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) or Company Registration Number, plus any details about previous business support you have received. Your UTR Number is a unique number that you will have received when you registered with HMRC. It will be the last 10 digits of your ‘Reference Number’ that can usually be found on any documents sent to you by HMRC.
